MUSIC
Requiem for Vicky
By David Welch
I wrote this piece of classical music to remember the life of my mother, Vicky. It was composed and recorded in my home studio to accompany a collection of photos spanning the life of my mother from her birth in 1932 to her passing in recent days, and was shown (and played) at her funeral in Sydney.
The piece begins with a cello solo, which represents the sadness that her death brought to my family and I. It then moves to the main theme, which I play with acoustic guitar and piano, recalling for me her selfless devotion to others and love for God's creation.
The second cello solo is in effect a cello trio, with three separate cello tracks harmonising together. This part of the song recalls my mother’s love and devotion for her husband and our family.
The song then returns to the main theme, with the acoustic guitar becoming more lively and prominent.
Requiem For Vicky celebrates the life of my mother, who was taken from us suddenly. The song helps me to remember that through her example, I can live a life of love and service for others. Life is a gift from God and we can spread His joy and bring people into the light as we journey together.
